Public transport in Athens has changed considerably. Two new means of transport - the Light Rail System and the Suburban Railway - are now in operation, while the Metro extensions (scheduled for 2004) have also been completed. For example, until recently, the only way to reach the airport was by bus, while now both the Metro and the Suburban Railway serve the airport.

For better and faster transport in busy periods, choose public transport instead of a private car.

Metro Network
The Athens Metro network has three lines: Line 1 (ISAP or Ì1), and Lines 2 and 3 (Ì2 and Ì3).

  • Ì1-ISAP: Piraeus - Kifissia
Line 1 - ISAP (Ì1) is a key link between the port of Piraeus and the northern suburbs of Athens via the city centre. The new station at Maroussi (Neratziotissa) is an interchange station between the Metro, the Suburban Railway and the Attiki Odos motorway.
  • M2: Agios Antonios - Agios Dimitrios
Metro Line 2 connects western and southern Athens. The latest additions to the metro system are Agios Antonios station, serving the western suburbs, and Agios Dimitrios station, serving the southern suburbs.
  • M3: Aegaleo – International Airport
Metro Line 3 connects the Western suburbs (Aegaleo) with the city centre, the northern suburbs (Halandri and Doukissis Plakentias stations) and the International Airport. Doukissis Plakentias station is an interchange station between the Metro, the Suburban Railway and the Attiki Odos motorway.
  • Suburban RailwaySuburban Railway
The Suburban Railway starts from Larissis Station (OSE Main Line station and Metro station) and terminates at the International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos). The following intermediate stations are in operation: Iraklio, Neratziotissa, Kifissias, Doukissis Plakentias, Pallini, Kantza, and Koropi.

From September 2005, the suburban railway travels also to Corinth.

It provides reliable transport to various suburbs of Athens and gives commuters an alternative means of transportation. It is also one of the main ways to access Olympic venues, either directly or by changing on to the Olympic Bus Lines.

    Tram (Light Railway)
The tram connects the city centre with the southern suburbs. It has two lines:

  • Line 1 (T1): Syntagma – Neos Kosmos – Palaio Faliro – Glyfada. Connects the city centre with the Coastal Zone.
  • Line 2 (T2): Peace and Friendship Stadium – Palaio Faliro – Helliniko. Connects Faliro Olympic Complex with Helliniko Olympic Complex.
  • The tram has connections with the ISAP and Metro lines. It contributes significantly to the improvement of traffic conditions and transport services in Athens.

Tram Line 1 starts from Neos Kosmos stop and terminates at 2nd Agios Kosmas stop. Line 2 starts from SEF (Peace & Friendship Stadium) and terminates at Paleo Dimarhio.

    Buses and Trolley Buses
The body responsible for the planning, coordination and management of transport in Athens is OASA (Athens Urban Transport Organisation), which operates ETHEL thermal buses, ILPAP Trolley Buses and Line 1 - ISAP. A network of some 320 buses adequately covers the needs of the metropolitan area of Athens, as well as certain areas outside city limits (such as the Thriasian Plain and the Mesogeia areas). Because of heightened demand for transport at Games-time, many transport services are enhanced and additional bus lanes are in operation in order to ensure fast and comfortable travel.

    Buses
There are roughly twenty trunk lines starting from Athens centre and serving the suburban municipalities. Local bus lines, that connect with the trunk lines serve also each municipality. There are also other bus lines connecting different points in the Athens metropolitan area (main lines) and also the intermuncipal lines.

    Trolley Buses
Trolley Buses serve central areas of Athens and Piraeus.

*Note: Certain lines will have extended hours of operation. For more information, please call the OASA Call Centre (185) or visi t the OASA official website.
